my wife and I are arriving in Madrid next april and have 13 days to visit Madrid and southern Spain we need recommendations as to how long we should stay in Madrid When we head south should we drive from Madrid or take the train and then rent a car in a smaller town? Also is it easy to hire local English speaking guides for each town or is it even advisable? Also should we prebook hotels or just the first one in Madrid? Thanks

Souther Spain Tour
by: Adam

Hi Gordon, I would leave 4 or more days for Madrid. Most likely you'll arrive early in the morning and be tired but I would power through and take a hop on hop off bus tour to get the lay of the land. Day two I would visit Plaza Mayor, the Castle, and the cathedral next door. I would suggest doing a tappas tour that night using viator. The tappas tour will introduce you traditional Spanish foods, wines, and aperativos. Day three I would take a day trip to Segovia using the train and be impressed with the ancient Roman aqueduct that is still standing. Day four I would take another day trip using the train to Toledo. Day five I would take the high speed train to Seville and spend at least two days their. Day 7 I would take the train at the Santa Justa train station to visit the bodegas/wineries in Jerez de la frontera. Day 8 if you wanted to avoid renting a car take the train to Cordoba and visit the masque. Day 9 take the train to Granada and spend a few days in Granada...see the Alhambra, take a tour of an olive farm, enjoy its charm. Return to Madrid via train. As far as hiring guides for each town I don't think that is necessary. Every major attraction will have a tour in English, all your hotel check in staff will speak English, and most of Madrid speaks some English. I would definitely book hotels for April. April can be a very expensive time to travel to Spain because of Semana Santa and La Feria in Seville. Check out my sight to learn more about these holidays. Hope that helps!
